impromptu eflyer

The Paolo Mejia Fine Arts and Design, and studio-FAB cordially invites everyone to attend our group art show entitled "Impromptu" by EPEKTO Art Projects.

EPEKTO Art Projects is a local Filipino-American arts group based in the Bay Area, California. The group was formed in 2011.

We have invited EPEKTO Art Projects to show at our collaborative space on Telegraph Avenue, Oakland this June. The group will be showcasing their members' dynamic and artistic creativity through their selected medium. "Impromptu" was developed to (in)formally introduce this locally based Filipino-American group and to share their skillful talents to the community. Their diverse collective engenders their prolific and persistent pursuit of creativity and camaraderie through showcasing, sharing and informing art in a non-verbal visual expression. Come pass by our collaborative space this June, meet and greet the artists at the reception, learn about their art making and see their awesome artwork.

“Remnants” by Rea Lynne de Guzman

deguzman eflyer

Paolo Mejia Fine Arts and Design cordially invites everyone to “Remnants,” an upcoming solo art show at our Oakland Annex facility in Jack London Square. Featured works by San Francisco-based artist Rea Lynn de Guzman, whose work explores psychological and socio-political themes surrounding liminal identity, cultural assimilation, and the Filipino/a diaspora, tempered by her experience as a Filipina immigrant living in the United States.

In this series of work, de Guzman references the iconography of “Maria Clara” (a mestiza character from Jose Rizal’s novel “Noli me Tangere” and metonym for a traditional dress woven from piƱa fiber and organza). Influenced by Spanish colonization, “Maria Clara” embodies Philippine ideals of female beauty equated with light skin, accompanied by stereotypes of chastity and demureness. Through the process of repetitive layering and a palette evoking skin tones, de Guzman utilizes the tactility of specific materials such as image transfers on synthetic organza to extract and repudiate these imposed ideals and stereotypes—material remnants intertwined with cultural legacies. Her work exemplifies complexity and historicity of the Filipino Culture.

Come pass by our annex facility in Jack London Square area and see our guest artist for the the months of May through July.

"The Beautiful, Surreal and Ugly" group art show

The Paolo Mejia Fine Arts and Design cordially invites everyone to our March group art show entitled “The Beautiful, Surreal and Ugly”. This group art show currently is exhibiting paintings magnifying the beautiful aesthetics of the floral form and reinterpreted in their own perspective. Some work may reference Georgia O' Keefe's floral influenced concepts, while others reinterpret the universal iconoclasm of beauty. The magnification of beauty and it's iconoclastic duality, through the scopes of floral abstraction, will be explored.
We invite everyone to our group art show this March that will usher in the Spring Equinox. Attend our reception on a First Friday art walk.
